Patient Resources Education Other Kidney Conditions

There are many health conditions that can damage your kidneys and lead to CKD and ESRD.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD)

There are two types of PKD: autosomal dominant PKD and autosomal recessive PKD. Autosomal dominant PKD causes cysts only in the kidneys. It is often called “adult PKD,” because people with this type of PKD might not notice any symptoms until they are between 30 and 50 years old. Autosomal recessive PKD causes cysts to grow in both the kidneys and the liver.

Lupus nephritis

Lupus nephritis (nef-RYE-tis) is the medical name for kidney swelling and irritation that is caused by lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases cause your immune system to attack your own healthy cells. When your immune system attacks your kidneys, they get damaged. The damage can be very serious.

Kidney cancer

Kidney cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the kidneys. It can happen to people of all ages. The most common type of kidney cancer is called renal cell carcinoma, and it usually happens in adults. This type of kidney cancer starts in the tiny filters in your kidneys.

Some rare, or less common, diseases can cause kidney damage that leads to chronic kidney disease and kidney failure. Some of these rare diseases include: Alport syndrome; amyloidosis; Goodpasture syndrome; and Wegener’s granulomatosis. These disease may harm the kidneys, as well as other organs and tissues.
